Induction machine: Proper for variable speed hydro !

Depending on requested power, speed, voltage and mechanical input, different type of induction generators be provided:

WRIN - wounded rotor, with brushes and slip-rings;

CEIN - capacitor excited.
Several arragements (1/3-phase, horizontal or vertical, open-drip proof, etc.) of induction generators are available. |

The standard SQIN generator is commonly used in low to medium (5-630 kW) power applications. If grid operated, and it usually requires a soft-starter and a power factor corection unit. In combination with 4Q frequency converters, it successfully empowers the simplicity of the variable speed non-regulated turbines.
The WRIN generator is mostly used in pumped-storage applications, at powers up to 400 MW/unit, in combination with 4Q frequency converters in the rotor.
The CEIN generator is used in powers up to 15 kW. A C-2C external capacitor excited 3-phase derated unit is often used to supply 1-phase island consumer networks. Also 1-phase generators with built-in capacitors, are used for the same purpose. |
